Thank again you to Mark McCormick who submitted a second photo of the Sea of Galilee. What a great shot! There is a great sense of tranquility here. I love seeing these places where Jesus Himself might have stood.

Thank you to Mark McCormick who submitted this incredible image which was taken earlier this year. What an incredible image! Perhaps Jesus Himself saw similar views. I wonder what His reaction would have been. Let ours be to praise our Creator and Lord.

There are a variety of reasons to care for creation. Here are a few more popular ones:

We care for creation because of its instrumental value. I care for it so that I can continue to use it and benefit from it (food, resources, etc).

We care for creation because we are commanded to. I care for the earth because God called me to steward it.

We care for creation because by doing so we can love our neighbor. I care for the earth in order to help others, including future generations.

Of course, there are many other reasons. One that I have been learning more about lately is this:

We care for creation because God cares for it. As His follower, His cares and concerns should be my cares and concerns.

Lizard spotted in Louisiana during prayer journeyIf God feels that creatures and creation were created good, that it is worth His effort to care for even the sparrows, and that it is important to reconcile all things, then perhaps I should follow Him in this.

I have often been called to follow our Lord, but it is only more recently that I am beginning to intentionally extend this idea to creation care. Perhaps I did this unintentionally before. Lately, I am seeing a plant not just as a plant for decoration or food, but as a creation of my Lord to be cared for. I am seeing the ant, not just as a nuisance, but as a creature of my Lord to be admired.

I find it easy to go through life without recognizing God’s creation for what it is. Trees, plants, flowers, birds, pets, and bugs abound. They are all around. Recently, however, I am seeing them more and more for what they really are – God’s creations. These are not just scenery, items in the background. No, they are incredible creations that praise God’s name.

I hope I can see this more and more. And I hope you can as well.

So often we miss beauty that is right in front of us. We would look right past something like some tomatoes. Yet, there is something so amazing about how God has ordered His creation that these things might grow how they do. Take a moment and reflect on the beauty of these tomatoes. Then ask yourself where else there may be unrecognized beauty right in front of you.

There is something so amazing about waterfalls. They have such extreme power and yet have a gentle elegance at the same time. How incredible is our Creator!

The Norm

A Few Distinctions

As Christians…

We are not environmentalists who care only for our own surroundings. We are people who care for God’s creation.

Our dominion of creation is not domination. Our dominion should reflect the way our Lord uses power in life-giving ways.

While we marvel at creation, we do not worship it. We worship only the Creator.

We do not pray at the expense of action. We pray that the Lord step in, then we participate where we are called.

Prayer does not just change the situation. Prayer changes the pray-er.

We do not ignore problems because God is in control. Precisely because He is in control we engage problems and seek to care for the things that He cares about.

Our hope for a restored creation is not wishful thinking. Our hope is a confident expectation in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

We do not despair in the face of a broken creation. We trust in the coming redemption of all things and seek to participate in that work.

There are few things that demonstrate the vastness of the Creator more than the ocean. I often feel like its beauty and grandeur point me to the greatness of our Lord. What do you think?

I recently came across this photo taken on Lago Atitlán in Guatemala in 1996. I was on my way by boat to a village that could not be accessible by vehicles.  There was something incredibly serene and beautiful about this area. This photo (especially since the quality has degraded over the years) does not even do the scene justice. I just love how God has painted his landscapes with amazing colors, not to mention how they are accented by sounds, smells, and weather. I appreciate how creation can really point us to the Creator.

I took this picture last summer in Sequoia National Park. When I think of this park I think of the amazing trees.  However, there is so much more to this park.  Here you see a small stream running through an incredibly green forest.  I just love the diversity of God’s creation.

Thank you to Sharon Conklin who submitted her husband Nate’s great photo from Ethiopia.  To date we have spent much time appreciating the beauty of God’s creation as seen in sunsets, plants, views, and more but little time on animals.  Today we take a moment to appreciate the beauty of creation as seen in this picture of two Zebras.  How awesome is our Lord?
